Amina Maharjan

Designation: Livelihood Specialist, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu

Amina Maharjan works as a Migration Specialist and leads the Resources, Capabilities, and Institutions group within the Livelihoods Theme at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). She is an agricultural economist by training, with expertise in labour migration and agriculture–development linkages. She started her career as a development practitioner in 2002 and has experience in sustainable development, human mobility and migration, sustainable agriculture, gender equity and social inclusion, and vocational skills development. She led the implementation of the Safer Migration project in Nepal, focusing on promoting safe and orderly migration. At ICIMOD, she works in the broad field of human mobility and migration in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, which covers eight countries, and its linkages with sustainable development and climate change adaptation. Her other interests include migration–development and migration–environment linkages, trans-Himalayan mobility, productive use of remittances, and women and migration. She also has experience leading multi-country, multi-partner consortia and cross-consortia research using inter- and transdisciplinary research methods. She has engaged with and provided inputs to policy makers and planners at the local, national, regional, and global levels on migration.
