Nepal has witnessed a significant outflow of its citizens in pursuit of better economic opportunities abroad. While these migrant workers contribute substantially to the national economy through remittances, their sacrifices come at a steep cost—their health and well-being. This lecture delves into the several health challenges confronting Nepali migrant workers, highlighting the physical, mental, and social aspects of their health.

Nepali migrant workers often find themselves in demanding and hazardous work environments, particularly in the Middle East and Malaysia, leading to occupational injuries and illnesses. Lack of access to healthcare and limited awareness further exacerbate their physical health concerns. This lecture will explore the prevalence of injuries, infectious diseases, and the impact of long working hours on their overall well-being. Furthermore, the psychological toll of migration, separation from families, and the harsh living conditions abroad take a significant toll on the mental health of Nepali migrant workers. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma often go unnoticed and untreated. The socio-economic determinants of health among Nepali migrant workers, including their living conditions, access to education, and financial stability, will also be explored. The lecture will underline how these factors intersect with their physical and mental health outcomes. To address the health challenges faced by Nepali migrant workers, this lecture will propose a set of policy recommendations, including improved access to healthcare, mental health support services, pre-departure training, and stronger labour protection laws.

In conclusion, this lecture seeks to raise awareness about the pressing health challenges confronting Nepali migrant workers, drawing attention to the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and policy reforms. By prioritising the well-being of these individuals, we can not only protect their rights but also harness the full potential of their contributions to Nepal's development.

Padam Simkhada is an Associate Dean International and Professor of Global Health at the University of Huddersfield, UK. He is an active researcher, having authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. His current research is on the health system in Nepal and health issues of migrant workers. Professor Simkhada is internationally known in the public health field. He has received many prestigious awards in the public health field such as the Global Health Award.
