Livelihoods, Basic Services and Social Protection in Nepal
Nepal has experienced several changes in its economic conditions and livelihood strategies following the decade-long experiences of conflict of various types. This review paper seeks to answer basic questions on livelihoods and services and social protection in Nepal by synthesising the available literature on the topic in order to establish the current level of understanding about these terms and identify the gaps in the knowledge. Various government and non-governmental organisations have taken proactive steps through various policies and programmes to enhance the livelihood and basic service security and social protection in post-conflict Nepal. This has helped improve the livelihoods, living standard, and the status of Nepal in different socio-economic fronts. Despite significant progress made over the last decade, there are still many challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and social exclusion prevalent in the country, with a visible divide between the rural and urban areas. Therefore, there is a need for some well-designed and targeted interventions to ensure improvements in livelihoods, basic services, and social protection for everyone in the country.

Labour Migration in South Asia: A Review of Issues, Policies and Practices
The paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent international labour migration trends in South Asia and its associated challenges. In addition, it reviews national policies, illustrates the role of international instruments, and highlights some good practices in the sub-region. By outlining the economic and migration profiles of South Asian countries, particularly, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the paper underscores some salient features of migration in the sub-region: increasing outflows to the Gulf and Middle East countries, high concentration of temporary labour migrants who are mostly semi-skilled and low-skilled, rising importance of female migration; prevalence of trafficking in human beings and smuggling of persons, and commercialisation of the recruitment industry.

The Forgotten Forces: Role of Migrants in Post-Conflict Nepal
The chapter examines the migration-development nexus in light of post-conflict state-building efforts. It notes how the contribution from migration during the conflict and immediate post-conflict time was used haphazardly and viewed solely in economic terms. However, it states that the realisation of its full potential is evidenced by the country’s endorsement of full-blown migration that fails to carefully assess its potential harm or advantage to state-building efforts. Keeping this in mind, the chapter provides an analysis on the migration-development nexus in relation to Nepal.

The "Dream-Trap": Brokering, "Study Abroad" and Nurse Migration from Nepal to the UK
This article examines the relationship between growing institutional structures and the migration of trained healthcare professionals, nurses in this case, from Nepal to the UK. Through case studies, the author reveals how most, if not all, of those who migrated to the UK have experienced a number of problems after being deceived by educational consultancies or brokers, leaving them far from achieving their professional aspirations. The article sheds light on the long and difficult process of obtaining employment and immigration status and shows how migration to the UK, with its stringent immigration policies, has become a ‘dream trap’ for many aspiring Nepali nurses.

Caught between Two Worlds: Internal Displacement Induced Dilemma in Nepal
The study discusses the multi-local livelihoods adopted by conflict-induced internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the background of the government’s proposal to rehabilitate them in their places of origin. It is based on fieldwork conducted between 2006 and 2009 in five urban districts of Dang, Banke, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur. Findings of the three-year field study suggest that a family’s decision to return depends on various factors within the host community as well as on the situation at the origin. Contrary to the government’s intentions, it is the IDPs’ present situation in urban areas that determines whether they want to remain in their present destination or return to their place of origin.
